Our Story

Get Smart Schools (GSS) began in 2008 with the cooperation of several local foundations, school leaders and nonprofit organizations. The founders of Get Smart Schools believed that new school creation could and must be a major component of a large-scale education reform strategy in Colorado. They envisioned a strategic and organized effort to grow the network of new schools and support continued innovation in public education.

Today, Get Smart Schools is a collaborative, forward-thinking organization that is able to break traditional barriers, attract smart thinkers and leaders, and unite education and business professionals to create successful schools for all Colorado students.

Our history is a promising indication of our future. We have supported the creation of 15 new schools and the transformation of three existing schools, and we are proud to report that 100% of GSS schools educate high poverty student populations. Early indicators of student achievement data in these schools suggests that they are outperforming other schools in their districts and are making strides towards the goal of closing the achievement gap.

Our goal for 2020? Prepare 85 new school leaders and support the transformation or creation of more than 50 new autonomous schools. It is our hope that with continued commitment to leadership, school development and academic achievement, the future is bright for Colorado kids.
