Girls Leadership Athletic School

GALS is an Expeditionary Learning School that provides a college preparatory education in a supportive environment that fosters the academic mastery and personal development necessary for every young woman to become a powerful advocate for herself and leader of her community. The school represents a standards-based response to the academic and social needs of the girls in the Denver Public Schools (DPS) who face barriers to realizing their full potential. Currently, DPS has one of the lowest female graduation rates in the state at 58.5%.

Mission

The mission of The Girls Athletic Leadership Schools (GALS) is to develop a national brand of public girls’ schools predicated on best practices in gender-based and active learning. The schools provide an innovative and necessary educational option that engages health and wellness as a key-contributing factor in optimizing academic achievement and self-development.

History

In 2010, Liz Wolfson and Nina Safane brought their vision for the Girls Athletic Leadership School to Colorado. With the backing of a private family foundation out of NYC with a full history of supporting women and health nationally and internationally, the founder of GALS began to spread the word of Colorado's first gender-based public school. Their charter was passed on November 30, 2009 and in August of 2010, GALS opened its doors with 120 students from all over the city including girls from Aurora, JeffCo, Thornton, Littleton and Cherry Creek. GALS enters into its second year serving all three middle school grades.
